This page is information on the use of subjunctive after certain conjunctions. We will eXpLoRe 4 different rules about the subjunctive tense!

When I see these sayings, I should use subjunctive verbs!

  • a menos de que: unless
por ejemplo: No recibes tu dinero a menos de que limpies tu cuarto.
You won't receive your money unless you clean your room.
  • en caso de que: in case
por ejemplo: En caso de que lo pierda, tengo un extra.
In case he loses it, i have an extra.
  • antes de que: before - You must have the "que" in order for the saying to need a subjunctive verb. Otherwise it's a preposition.
  • para que: so, in order that
  • con tal de que: provided

When a verb follows a preposition, DON'T use the subjunctive, even if it seems you would use it! Use the infinitive!

Por ejemplo:
  • Limpió su dormitorio para recibir su dinero. (He cleaned his room to recieve his money)
  • Come tu comida antes de salir de la mesa. (Eat your food before leaving the table)

When I see these sayings that refer to the future, I should use subjunctive verbs!

  • Cuando: when
  • En cuanto: as soon as
  • después de que: after
  • hasta que: until
  • tan pronto como: as soon as
Por ejemplo:
Cuando salgas, limpiaré.
When you leave, i'll clean.

DON'T use subjunctive if the action happens regularly or already happened (past tense). Use the indicative.

Por ejemplo:
Cuando come, él come mucho.
When he eats, he eats a lot.
Ella necesitaba a limpiar su cuarto.
She needed to clean her room.
